About World Gliding Championships
For the first time, the World Gliding Championships were held in 1937 in Wasserkuppe (Germany). The World Air Sports Federation (FAI) is the organizer of the event. At present the championships are held every two years for the majority of competitions, as their number has increased and it would be practically impossible to have them all at all classes during one event at one time and place. Gliding was a demonstrative kind of sport during the Summer Olimpic Games in 1936. It was also intended to have gliding at the scheduled for 1940 Olympics in Helsinki as one of the regular competitions, however, after World War II the idea was abandoned.
